REVIEW OF HUNGAMA 2 It’s been 18 years since Hungama was released and over the years, the film has attained a cult status among Indian viewers. The slapstick, loud, comedy of errors was directed by Priyadarshan, who helms the sequel, Hungama 2, too. However, the sequel isn’t a continuation of Radheshyam Tiwari, Anjali, and Aakash’s stories from part one. In fact, Hungama 2 is loosely based on Priyadarshan’s 1994 film Minnaram, featuring Mohanlal in the lead.
Aakash (Meezaan Jafri), a carefree youngster, is set to get married to the daughter of his father Kapoor's (Ashutosh Rana) friend Bajaj (Manoj Joshi). Preparations are in full swing for the engagement when, out of the blue, a girl named Vaani (Pranitha Subhash) lands at his doorstep with a kid in her arms. Vaani claims that the kid is Aakash and her daughter, and all hell breaks loose. While Aakash claims that she’s lying, the evidence suggests otherwise. Kapoor decides to get to the bottom of the matter and involves Anjali (Shilpa Shetty) who he considers being his daughter. However, Anjali’s suspicious husband Radhe (Paresh Rawal) overhears their conversation and starts believing that Anjali and Aakash are having an affair. Thus, starts a comedy of errors.
If you’ve watched the trailer of this film, you will more or less understand that this one’s going to be a typical Priyadarshan comedy – slapstick, loud, and full of confusion. On that front, the director doesn’t disappoint. However, Hungama 2 suffers from the problem of being stuck in the same formula that Priyadarshan has, and continues to use in all his films. In today’s time when there’s a huge variety of content in various genres being consumed, Hungama 2 sticks out like a sore thumb. What the viewers get is ultimate, a mish-mash of Hungama and Hulchul with hints of his other films De Dana Dan and Malamaal Weekly.
Hungama 2 boasts of a mix of actors. Priyadarshan’s frequent collaborators – Rawal, Joshi, Tiku Talsania, and Rajpal Yadav – feature prominently. The film also has newer actors like Meezaan and Pranitha, along with Shilpa Shetty, who makes her return to the big screen after quite some time, Rana and Johny Lever (seen in a cameo). All of them give their best - but there’s nothing novel that they bring to the table, majorly because the story doesn't hold. Characters enter and exit after every 5-10 mins in the film and add little to nothing to the story. Meezaan and Pranitha try to do their best but seem out of place amid the chaos.
Hungama 2 is mildly entertaining, but for most of its run time, the film is stretched, has too many stereotypes and lame punchlines passed off as jokes. That said, it may just strike a chord with Priyadarshan movie fans.
